The 16th Johor State Election (PRN Johor Ke-16) follows a fixed official timeline set by the Election Commission of Malaysia. Understanding each stage helps voters know what to expect in the weeks leading up to polling day on July 11, 2026.
The process began when the Johor State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on June 1, 2026, at the request of the caretaker Menteri Besar. The Election Commission then issued the writ of election and confirmed the key dates. All 56 seats of the Johor assembly are up for grabs, and a coalition needs at least 29 seats to form the state government.
Nomination Day falls on June 27, 2026. On this day, candidates formally submit their papers at designated nomination centres, and the official list of contestants for each of the 56 constituencies is confirmed. Once nominations close, the 14-day campaign period runs until 11:59 pm on July 10.
Early voting takes place on July 7, 2026. This is reserved for military personnel and their spouses, as well as designated police personnel and their spouses, who cast their ballots ahead of the general public. Early voting is always held at least three days before ordinary polling.
Polling Day for the general public is July 11, 2026. More than 2.7 million registered voters across Johor are eligible to cast their ballots at their assigned polling centres. Votes are counted the same evening, with results expected through the night.
Malaysia uses a first-past-the-post system, meaning the candidate with the most votes in each single-member constituency wins the seat. Voters should confirm their polling centre via the MySPR Semak tool before July 11. Note that the neighbouring Negeri Sembilan state election has a separate polling day on August 1, 2026, so the two should not be confused.
